Meat Puppets – Golden Lies

Meat Puppets
Artist: Meat Puppets
Title: Golden Lies
Label: Atlantic
Rating: 5/10

Meat Puppets have one, well maybe two, claims to fame. Kurt Cobain brought them to the historical Nirvana Unplugged to play a song or two. And then on the heels of that they had barely a hit song with “Backwater”. Now the Meat Puppets are only a Meat Puppet; of the two brothers, only Curt Kirkwood remains.

The Meat Puppets are known for their country meets acid rock sound. They still have that, but they throw in a bit of punk and a lot of generic dime store rock. “Armed And Stupid” throws off a hook too modern for a group that never came prepared for radio. “Take Off Your Clothes” is a mix of Suicidal Tendencies and every other punk hip-hop unit looking for cash money. This is a bit more ghetto, but not much better.

The only songs worth a listen are the off-kilter “You Love Me” and the silly “Fatboy/Fat/Requiem”. Actually, “Fatboy..” turns out to be a pretty nonsensical entertainer. That is classic Puppets at work. You get some new, some old, but even half a Puppet is better than none.
