Megadeth – The System Has Failed

Megadeth
Artist: Megadeth
Title: The System Has Failed
Label: Sanctuary
Rating: 6.5/10

CORPORATE LINE: The System Has Failed, the tenth studio album released under the Megadeth banner, is pure, unfiltered, uncompromising Mustaine, freeing himself for the first time from all prior concepts of who or what Megadeth is “supposed” to be. Yet at the same time, the album is a virtual compendium of everything that made and continues to make Megadeth one of the most unique entities ever in the history of heavy rock. From opener “Blackmail The Universe,” with its classic, chugging riff, to the politically charged, turbulent “Kick The Chair,” to the painfully personal “Truth Be Told,” this is a record that could only be written by one person, with one singular worldview.

THE GREAT:
“Blackmail The Universe” – Speeding licks mixed with a political commentary makes for a treat for Megadeth fans.
“Die Dead Enough” – You won’t be surprised to that this is the first single. It’s introspective and catchy—shocking—but might be a little too mainstream for die-hards.
“Kick The Chair” – A real thrashing! Fans will ache for the Rust In Peace days to come back again.

THE AVERAGE:
“Of Mice and Men” – Mustaine reflects on his life and the lessons he’s learned. Almost reminiscent of Sinatra’s “When I was Seventeen”—has this comparison ever been used before?

THE BAD:
“Truth Be Told” – The vocals are pain inducing.

FRANKLY: Dave Mustaine is pissed off and that is one reason The System Has Failed works. This is a lesson to wanna-be thrashers.
