CORPORATE LINE: Everyone thinks they can sing Motown, and let’s be honest, nearly everyone has. Few are as qualified, in every sense, as the man who does it to inspiring effect on the new album Michael McDonald Motown.
Thousands of hopeful young singers have paid their dues in smoky bars playing songs from Motown’s heady heyday. Back in St.Louis in the very late 1960s, one of them had them in his armoury as he set about getting noticed on his way to a multi-platinum career as one of the great singer-songwriters of his day. Now, McDonald has returned to his first love.
THE GREAT:
“Reach Out. I’ll Be There” – A great cover song. McDonald proves that we never get tired of great songs.
“Tracks Of My Tears” – Even though it sounds like it came from the ‘80s, McDonald puts his own spin on the song and makes it his own.
“What’s Goin’ On” – McDonald does it again on
“Second That Emotion” – If you love Motown then you’ll be singing along!
THE AVERAGE:
“Baby I Need Your Lovin’ ” – McDonald has a magnificent voice too bad he doesn’t make anything fantastic of the song.
“You’re All I Need To Get By” – Nice—not great.
“Stop, Look, Listen” – Sounds dated.
THE BAD: None.
FRANKLY: Michael McDonald has chosen some great Motown hits—however there are some that don’t come off very well.
