I bombed Mad Season for being average. Can Matchbox Twenty fix what seemed to be broken?
Now Hear This:
“Feel” – The fact that this track doesn’t sound like your usual M20 track is what is most enjoyable. It punches hard and takes a different, more entertaining direction.
“Bright Lights” – Close to being slide down a notch, but saved with a strong end.
“All I Need” – Another track with a different flavor. It’s a straight up rocker with a familiar but catchy hook.
“Hand Me Down”
“The Difference” – Lovely.
Listen Once or Twice:
“Soul” – High energy, and tries to gather momentum by pretending they are picking up steam, too bad there isn’t much going on down deep.
“Downfall” – Interesting, but not great.
“Unwell” – “I’m not crazy, I’m just a little unwell/I know right now you can’t tell/But stay awhile and maybe then you’ll see/A different side of me”.
“You’re So Real”
Skip It:
“Disease” – Your typical boring rock track. Where is the diversity that “Feel” had?
Matchbox Twenty have a lot of talent to spare it’s just too bad they forget to put it all on the table with each record. The songs seem to be a color by numbers representation of all rock music today. So are they trendsetters or a part of the average group of rock groups today? Hard to say but More Than You Think You Are is an apt title.
