The Mayfield Four have been compared to Soundgarden and Led Zeppelin. While some of these comparisons are true their second album, Second Skin, they should find us comparing them to their previous release, right? Yeah, that would only be fair.
Who cares about being fair? Not I. “Loose Cannon” is some weird concoction of Spacehog and Stone Temple Pilots. Maybe my ears are detuned or something, but that’s what seems to be going on. Let it be known that the song is supremely enjoyable. As edible is “Mars Hotel”, a rock song without excuses.
Wait a second. Now I know why I was hearing Spacehog and Stone Temple Pilots, the common denominator being David Bowie. Hmmm. Listen long as you hear the influence rolling around in your ear.
Sorry about the detour. “Eden” opens you up to the vulnerable while “High” goes totally Iron Maiden. Okay, not that cheesy, but close. Axl Rose gets his run on “Backslide” as they grease it out. Now I’m getting worried about the ride I’m on.
As much good music the Mayfield Four know, they also know cheese and how to spread it thick. All is fixed as the album comes to an end with the epic “Summergirl”. Second Skin escapes evenly with only a few bumps in the road.
