CORPORATE LINE: Charlotte Martin is set to release her highly anticipated RCA Records full-length debut ON YOUR SHORE August 10. Produced by Ken Andrews (Pete Yorn), ON YOUR SHORE “…at once recalls the banshee wails of Kate Bush and the radio-friendly melancholy of the Cure” (Paper Magazine). Combining introspective, emotionally complex lyrics, soaring vocals and lush piano Charlotte has created an intimate, achingly beautiful album that picks up where her 2003 EP IN PARENTHESES left off.
THE GREAT:
“Your Armor” – This song sticks with you—first for the lovely melody and secondly for the goose-bumps.
“Limits Of Our Love” – Martin opens this with a darker tone with a radio friendly style that might bring her to the light of the masses.
“Haunted” – Dark and yet lovely—the two rarely work so well together.
“Sweet Charity” – Love the melody—take me home!
“Something Like A Hero” – Dissonant chords aside, this is a gorgeous song that proves Martin has untapped potential.
THE AVERAGE:
“On Your Shore” – Certainly the Tori Amos comparisons are going to come in swarms.
“Every Time It Rains” – This is your typical song about being sad, and on and on… been there, done that—Amos fans won’t be impressed.
THE BAD:
“Wild Horses” – Do we really need another cover of “Wild Horses”? No one can do it like the Rolling Stones or ever will.
FRANKLY: The opera-trained Charlotte Martin shows off her strong vocal skills. It’s easy to tell that Joni Mitchell and Tori Amos are her idols—someday Martin will learn to be Charlotte Martin. Martin has the skills but doesn’t have the same depth of lyric that fans of Amos would expect or accept. However—if the Amos fans don’t like it too bad—Martin is sure to find her flock of admirers.
