Angie Martinez – Up Close & Personal

Angie Martinez
Artist: Angie Martinez
Title: Up Close & Personal
Label: Elektra
Rating: 6.5/10

Angie Martinez has been ruling the airwaves on New York City’s Hot 97 hip-hop station for a good majority of the ’90’s. It’s on these airwaves that she befriended many of the most influential artists working today, from Jay-Z to Wyclef to Snoop Dogg, and on Up Close And Personal she’s invited them to stop on by.

Every track features a guest, so we don’t get all Angie all the time. It’s almost like her pulling it up on Hot 97. People come in, throw down their parts, and walk out while the others walk in.

“Every Little Girl” is the part that finds us getting up close and personal with Angie. Wyclef brings “Coast 2 Coast” with a great hook, but Angie’s parts aren’t exactly up to par. “Live At Jimmy’s” features Big Pun, Cuban Link, Domingo, and Sunkiss. It has a swinging hook. “Silly Niggaz” goes back, way back, even featuring some beatbox from Biz Markie.

“No Playaz” features Lil’ Mo and Tony Sunshine for a taste of girl power New York style. Mary J. Blige brings her powerful presence to an otherwise average track, “Breathe”. “Go! Motherfucka” is an angry track, but it doesn’t live up to its aggressive title.

The best tracks are saved for last. Jay-Z pulls it hard on “Mi Amor” whereas Angie is MIA. “Dem Thangz” which features Q-Tip finds Angie doing a bit more work and bouncing lines back and forth with Q. Angie Martinez is good at talking, but it seems she isn’t as hot as a rapper. It’s just not believable. Perhaps I’m naive, but I’m not buying it.
