I will admit that I couldn’t find my way around to liking Barry Manilow. And I have my reasons as stupid as they might be. There was this kid in high school, the singer, the geek, the kid we all laughed at and yes I feel bad now, but the kid was annoying and he was always humming show tunes. Well that kid loved Barry Manilow and he wanted you and I to know it. Believe me, I’ll never forget the Manilow song “Copacabana” because of him. Well to listen to Barry today still sends shutters but I’m a journalist, I must be unbiased so I’ve left the ill will behind and gave Ultimate Manilow a try.
First off you can’t ignore the fact that Manilow dominated the mid seventies. He had more number one Billboard Adult Contemporary hits than you care to count, not to mention number one hit pop songs as well. “Mandy” was a hit on just about every chart it fell on.
There are some songs that I just can’t get into like “It’s A Miracle”. They are just too fluffy for my tastes, but I see someone liked them as they scored huge. Okay I will be completely honest. I listened to the whole album and still couldn’t get into it. That doesn’t mean Barry isn’t good or this album isn’t all that. It’s just not my cup of tea. If you love Manilow and want a good compilation of his hits this is a good place to start. However since those of you who will buy this are probably already fans you will certainly own these songs already. One minus is a missing track “Run To Me”, a duet with Dionne Warwick.
