M2m is Marit E. Larsen and Marion E. Raven, hailing from Oslo, Norway. They’ve known each other since they were five and have been involved in music together for as long as they can remember. After recording children’s albums back home, they decided to take it to another level.
Shades Of Purple boasts the first single, “Don’t Say You Love Me”
. It’s clean and cute, but lyrically it’s weak. The strong melody is at least a redeeming factor. “The Day You Went Away” is more interesting and as catchy as the first single.
“Girl Of Your Dreams”
was a good idea that lost its focus. I’m beginning to see a trend toward the producers trying to make M2m sound like Britney Spears. “Mirror Mirror” is exactly an example of this. Sure, they can sing, but I don’t want to hear some old retreads.
I thought “Dear Diary” was going to be a great track, but then there are some additional vocals by Jai which are horrible. The same goes for “Do You Know What You Want”. Full Force often adds the clichd ‘yeah’ and ruins what is the best musical track on the album. Worst of all, Full Force is credited for producing the impressive musical track, but they should have kept their egos in check and left the singing to the girls.
The one impressive thing is that the girls co-write many of the songs, and also play guitar and keyboards. That alone proves they’ve got more talent than most manufactured pop acts today. Shades Of Purple has a very positive message and that’s great considering their listeners are mostly young girls. The biggest mistake is that the entire album has six or more producers. Although it adds diversity, it also lacks some much-needed identity. A few of the producers wanted them to do the Britney Spears thing and others allow them to carve their own niche. Still, the album is fun, even if it is all over the place.
