Madonna – Confessions On A Dance Floor

Madonna
Artist: Madonna
Title: Confessions On A Dance Floor
Label: Warner Bros.
Rating: 8.5/10

FILE UNDER: The Queen of Pop is back.

CORPORATE LINE: With one foot in the early roots of her career as a “dance artist” and the other foot planted firmly into the sound of “future disco”, Madonna returns to the clubs with a vengeance “CONFESSIONS ON A DANCE FLOOR”.

Recorded in London, ‘Confessions’ features songs primarily co-written and co-produced by Madonna and Stuart Price, producer, mixer and DJ-supreme ( Les Rythmes Digitales, Jaques Le Cont). Price was Madonna’s musical director on her 2002 Drowned World Tour and last summer’s Reinvention Tour.

THE GREAT:
“Hung Up” – No one with half a brain would have thought sampling ABBA would amount to a great song—except Madonna. Even though the lyrics are elementary it doesn’t hurt the song. The beat will move you.
“Sorry” – Only Madonna can sell a song about being strong enough to leave a bad relationship and make you dance. She is the true queen of pop.
“Jump” – Taking the plunge into the unknown and going it alone has never sounded so incredible exciting. This could be an anthem for any woman who is going out on their own.

THE AVERAGE:
“Get Together” – An interesting track that touches on finding religion and a sense of enlightenment. It lacks a big hook.
“How High” – A brilliant beat that Madonna never takes control of lyrically as she contemplates “was it all worth it?”
“Isaac” – A great beat mixed with chants that could have been a song without Madonna.
“Like It Or Not” – Madonna drags out a beat that sounds like it came from a disco Marilyn Manson. The lyrics are some of the worst on the album.

THE BAD:
“I Love New York” – An attempt to pay homage to New York turns into a mess. Rhyming “F Off” with going to “Texas, isn’t that where they golf?” is awful.

FRANKLY: Madonna has turned the beat around. Just as most reviewers, including myself, thought she’d be better off hanging it up Madonna goes out and once again proves the detractors wrong. It seems no one can keep Madonna down.
