The Line: Madonna takes it back to the basics.
The Good:
“Hollywood” – As pretentious and weak as the lyrics are the hook is quite undeniable.
The Marginal:
“Nothing Fails” – The bridge that sounds pleasing, but the chorus is weak. Then we get verses that are pretentious, so the track can go either way.
“Nobody Knows Me” – Funky beat, it’s just too bad that’s all there is to offer.
“American Life” – Madonna tries to tell us how she lives the American dream and how she forgot. Through her pondering of how she got there and what she might have to do to stay there you start to wonder if it’s real emotion or something less than genuine. It’s hard to always buy what Madonna is selling.
“Mother And Father” – There are parts that are good. The lyrics are touching. I’m just not sure what the deal with the quasi rap that Madonna attempts to lay down. It sounds like a bad cover of Blonde’s “Rapture”.
“X-Static Process” – Lovely little track about religion and looking at yourself.
The Ugly:
“I’m So Stupid” – Yawn.
Frankly: Madonna doesn’t go for the over-the-top production of her two previous releases and it’s okay. Madonna doesn’t transform herself here. She only gets more introspective and sets a more down to earth tone, which you can’t be sure, suits her better. American Life doesn’t boast big hits of the past and will probably fall to the bottom of her catalog.
