It’s been a long time since Usher came from upstart to overnight success. He worked his ass off and made My Way the surprise album of its time. Usher became an idol and hero to people worldwide. He’s back with 8701, which seems like it should be his tenth album, but it’s only his second. Can Usher get the momentum going again?
“U Remind Me” is the gorgeous R&B you’d expect. Usher has a golden voice and this song is solid. Wherever “Twork It Out” came from, I want more. It’s beautiful, yet mature. Usher’s voice seems to have changed for the better, if that was even possible. “U Got It Bad” picks up where My Way left off and pours itself into a silk negligee.
“I Can’t Let U Go” is bitter, rocks, and isn’t the usual, which actually gives it its appeal.
Usher has grown up a lot. He’s producing and writing, all on top of singing. If Usher is already a living legend, 8701 will only extend that status.
