Mr. William Owsley has put together a phenomenal debut album, which he recorded from October 1995 through December 1998 on a 16-track in his home studio. Owsley has been around the block a few times; he fronted a band with the now successful Ben Folds, toured with Amy Grant, and sang a duet with Shania Twain.
Owsley’s record owes a lot to the Beatles and Todd Rundgren, not to mention a few bands that called the late ’60’s and early ’70’s home, though his sound doesn’t warrant comparison. He has blurred the lines where classic rock meets modern pop. The opening track, “Oh No The Radio”, is an infectious pop-rock song. “I’m Alright” finds Owsley toying with your ears and mind as he twists the knobs and puts together yet another in a long line of big pop tunes. “Coming Up Roses” is destined to be a classic.
“The Sky Is Falling” is wacky, but good. My favorite song on the already amazing disc is the laid back and wonderful “Sentimental Favorite”. The album closes on a high-note with “Class Clown”.
It is obvious that a lot of time and care went into the crafting of this album. It is amazing to think that it was born in October of 1995; it shows just how timeless the album truly is. We all know that talent always transcends space and time.
