CORPORATE LINE: Now a decade into their recorded career, Our Lady Peace have reached a new creative and conceptual peak with Healthy in Paranoid Times: from challenging themselves with new writing/recording techniques and redefining the goals of the band, to addressing global issues of consumerism and capitalism head-on.
“This record is a perfect representation of our personalities and our perspectives on things at the current moment,” says drummer Jeremy Taggart.
Add Maida: “This is the real Our Lady Peace. It’s the four of us making music together and an honest reflection of the seed of everything we planted 10 years ago.”
THE GREAT:
“Angels/Losing/Sleep” – There are pieces of this track that I love. I love the tasty repeating verse “I’ll wait.” This is classic OLP with a melody that hooks you from the first verse.
“Wipe That Smile Off Your Face” – A brilliant song that fans have probably heard live already. Perhaps the reason it stands out is because it’s from OLP of a few years back.
THE AVERAGE:
“Will The Future Blame Us” – The lyrics don’t seem to fit the pop instrument track.
“Picture” – Extremely average.
“Love And Trust” – I can’t believe this is Our Lady Peace. What happened to the great band we knew and loved? This sounds like a bad joke.
“Apology” – Much of the same dribble. “Apology” is painful to listen to. I’m on the verge of giving up listening to music altogether. This was once a band we could rely on. Where do we put our faith now?
THE BAD:
“Walking In Circles” – Brutal. Disappointing.
FRANKLY: I am a huge fan of Our Lady Peace—long before they were even noticed in America; which is unfortunate for this review. Is it unfair to compare a band to themselves and not the market? Perhaps, but then again who could we possible compare U2 to or Radiohead? Our Lady Peace is a band that has been here and has produced some great music. I’m sorry, but this is one of their weakest efforts to date.
