Erykah Badu has a reputation for being the soul of a lost musical revival. Mama’s Gun opens with a whole other surprise. The rock ‘n’ roll psychedelic of a wah’d guitar drips behind Badu’s voice as she brings “Penitentiary Philosophy” to us.
More in the vein of the Erykah Badu you remember is the seductive “Kiss Me On The Neck”. “Cleva” brings a melody and chilling vocal style that you won’t soon wear out. “Booty” is a raucous vibe of sugar and spice, but not everything so nice.
Stephan Marley confesses on “In Love With You”. I love the soul, the testimony of life, love, and all its derivatives found on Mama’s Gun. I can’t help but to keep going back to “Penitentiary Philosophy” and its hardened arteries. That is the Badu I look forward to.
