Company Line: Erykah Badu’s third studio album Worldwide Underground is a collection of songs firmly rooted in soul without being nostalgic, recalling a time when ceilings where higher and folk weren’t afraid to let the music play.
The Good:
“Back In The Day” – the melody will take you over.
“Woo” – Can you feel it?
“Danger” – A song worth singing.
“Love Of My Life Worldwide” f/Queen Latifah, Angie Stone & Bahamadia – lush chorus that steals the show away from some weak MCing.
The Average:
“Bump” – Hmmm. It’s not entirely bad just doesn’t seem like much of a song as she continually sings “push up the fader/ bust the meter/ shake the tweeter/ bump it” over and over again.
“I Want You” – Eleven minutes in experimental noise and if BAdu’s voice wasn’t so beautiful you’d have hung yourself from the rafters.
The Ugly:
“The Grind” – ML is weak as the guest rapper.
Frankly: More an experiment in sound than songs. It’s a shame that Erykah Badu decided to stray from her proven formula – it doesn’t help that there are only eight tracks.
