P.J. Olsson is artsy. He is crafty. He is blind. The last is the best quality of all. And I don’t mean blind in the conventional sense. No, he can see, but he doesn’t see what is selling a lot of records today. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have made this one. This record was made because Olsson loves what he does, not because he wants to be a rich man. That said, this album isn’t for mass consumption. “Good Dream” opens with a general pop feel, but not the type you are used to.
Soul Coughing would be jealous of “Dandelion”. It has that gruff vocal style, but the chorus is lush and pretty. “Visine” sounds so much like Ben Harper that I studied the credits, but alas it is Olsson. One of my favorite tracks comes as a toned down love track called “Ready For A Fall”.
I fell for the rock on “Whisper In Time”. It cuddles you softly and then pounds you hard. My favorite track by far is “Beautiful Woman”. And it’s a surprise because it is the last track. How often does an album’s best track come last? That is just how unpredictable P.J. Olsson is, and I give thanks for that.
