OPM – Menace To Sobriety

OPM
Artist: OPM
Title: Menace To Sobriety
Label: Atlantic
Rating: 6.5/10

If you’ve thought about buying OPM’s Menace To Sobriety because of their radio friendly release “Heaven Is A Halfpipe”, then you may step back as the first track, “Stash UP”, spews the word ‘fuck’ maybe a few hundred times. I’m not offended, but some parents might be, just as they might be bothered about the glamorizing of dope dealing on “Dealerman”. “Heaven Is A Halfpipe” will suck the kiddies in, but I hope they realize that this bad boy album isn’t fourteen tracks just like that one.

OPM knows how to write slick punkish tracks, but my favorite track, “Undercover Freak”, is pretty much a pop track mixed in with a little ska beat in the back. Then again, the slowish “Brighter Side” is pretty good. You get the feeling that these guys have some soul. Even though “Better Daze” is hot, it’s obviously a rip off of Everlast’s hit, “Endz”.

OPM has no problem going from sounding like the Bosstones to D.R.I. in seconds. You won’t believe the transition from “Unda” to “Interlude: 15 Minutes” to “Fish Out Of Water”. Diversity has its advantages, but it also has some disadvantages. OPM plays it well and makes it work. You’ll never be bored with a Menace To Sobriety.
