I love Oasis plain and simple. But the love for their music stems from days seemingly long past. With each new record I slip further and further away from hope they can get back what they once had. So can Heathen Chemistry bring back the joy?
Joy:
“Born On A Different Cloud” – There doesn’t seem to be a lot to grasp onto lyrically, but there is something powerful about it. It’s the one track that definitely sticks with you long after and most surprisingly written by Liam.
“The Hindu Times” – Sounds more Rolling Stones than anything. I keep waiting for them to break into their cover of “Street Fighting Man”. However between the nice riff and Liam’s nasal drainage the song made me a convert.
“Hung In A Bad Place” – Simple, straight-ahead rock ‘n’ roll with a solo and all. It almost makes you nostalgic.
“She Is Love” – Noel’s third vocal track and by far the best. It’s simple and that is the beauty of it.
“Better Man” – Back to the basics, its always good for the soul, and your music.
Between Joy and Sadness:
“Force Of Nature” – Although interesting I could live without hearing about someone smoking all Noel’s stash and burning his cash. It’s too narrow for a song that Noel brings the table.
“Stop Crying You Heart Out” – Short on quality lyrics, or any lyrics for that sake, and is it me or does this sound like every ballad Oasis has ever released? Come on Noel give us some other kind of love song progression you’re getting lazy on us.
“Probably All In The Mind” – Rock.
Sadness:
“Little By Little” – I usually look forward to the songs that are sung by Noel.
“Song Bird” – Yuck. Sticky, sappy, could this really be written by Liam?
Oasis still has their chops. Noel seems to be slacking a little on his lyrics however. There doesn’t seem to be a song here that goes as deep as a “Wonderwall” or that screams as loud as “Supersonic”. I don’t want pure reproductions of days long past, just something that gives us the range and depth that we’ve come to hang our hat on when an Oasis album is played. Reunite the original members I say, perhaps then we’ll have all the fire in the belly back again. Two albums since the departures and still the flame seems long lost as well as the attitude.
