Company Line: 311 will release their 7th LP, “Evolver”, on July 22, 2003. The album was produced by Ron Saint Germain (Bad Brains, Soundgarden, Tool). Saint also produced the “311” and “From Chaos” albums. The band recorded and mixed “Evolver” at their own Hive Studios in Los Angeles.
The Good:
Nothing.
Inbetween:
“Beyond The Gray Sky” – 311 were just on the verge of something. Right at that peak but couldn’t quite get over it.
“Creatures (For A While)” – Argue the point but lets admit we’ve heard them sing this one before under a different title. It’s the same ol’ same ol’.
“Reconsider Everything” – 311 has a signature sound and that is all well and good if only they didn’t sound bored performing.
“Sometimes Jacks Rule The Realm” – Pink Floyd they are not. Give them credit for trying.
The Ugly:
“Same Mistake Twice” – Stretching their arms couldn’t sound any worse. Could it?
“Crack The Code” – You’ve got to be kidding me. This would be goofy for even the Chili Peppers fifteen years ago.
Frankly: 311 haven’t evolved, although two tracks give you the inclination that they could. Instead they bring the same old tired bag of tricks. Either 311 sounds bored being 311 or I’m too bored to care anymore. If you want to buy the same record you’ve heard twice before go ahead – I’m skipping this one.
