Richard Lugo is lucky. He was discovered and nurtured by super producer Dallas Austin. Lugo wanted to bring the Miami sound to the pop mainstream, and in some regards he has done that. However, Boom opens with the very NSYNC sounding “All The Girl I Need”. So is the rest of this album just formulaic mumbo-jumbo?
Well, the title track, “Boom”, isn’t exactly unique, but it is distinctive. “Me” has a certain snap to it that that is undeniable. And although the album flows well in the beginning, they quickly get bogged down with all too sappy love songs. I don’t mind a ballad or two, but when you start giving us four or more in a row, then your head is just about ready to explode.
Richard Lugo has the looks, he has the voice, and he’s extremely young. All of that adds up to a bright future. So we’ll just consider this freshman release a step in the right direction.
