Corporate Line: There’s a world of difference between pop stars who sing other people’s songs, and female singer/songwriters who truly touch your soul. With a voice that’s powerful, passionate, endlessly expressive, and full of contagious energy, Toby Lightman is just that type of artist-one who will undoubtedly surprise and captivate those who listen to her debut record, Little Things.
The Good:
“Leave It Inside” – A delightful pop song that proves pop music doesn’t have to be trite.
“Devils & Angels” – A hot chorus that’s lush not tart. Ditto for “Coming Back”.
“Frightened” – The love doesn’t stop. I’m gushing over this lovely ballad.
“The River” – Striking. I wonder if I’m supposed to really enjoy myself so much.
The Average:
“Voices” – Monotonous after being served a handful of slower tracks.
The Ugly:
“Front Row” – A song for her long times on the road. Not so interesting for the listener.
Frankly: Toby Lightman sounds like Fiona Apple’s twin without all the overdramatic humdrum. Little Things falls off a bit at the end, but not enough that it’ll leave you unsatisfied.
