Tommy Lee – Tommyland: The Ride

Tommy Lee
Artist: Tommy Lee
Title: Tommyland: The Ride
Label: TL
Rating: 5.5/10

CORPORATE LINE: The album is a collection of rock-driven tunes, some infused with pop, electronica and other flavors that chart the foibles of romance, celebrity and life in general. The album will satisfy rock devotees and others with its solidly constructed hooks and guest performances by such artists as Dave Navarro (Jane’s Addiction), Joel Madden, Carl Bell (Fuel), Deryck Whibley, Andrew McMahon (Jack’s Mannequin / Something Corporate), Nick Carter (Backstreet Boys), and Butch Walker.

THE GREAT:
“Hello Again” – f/Andrew McMahon – The chorus is catchy thanks to McMahon’s silky voice.
“Sister Mary” – f/Carl Bell – Actually a good hook that gets you singing along.

THE AVERAGE:
“Makin’ Me Crazy” – f/Dirty Harry – Dirty Harry is a female who has one hell of a sexy voice—its too bad Tommy Lee ruins it.
“Good Times” – F/Butch Walker – ‘Take me away’ is a very nice hook. It has a great sound of summer but there is something regurgitated about this—something from the many workings of Butch Walker. Walker does get the best out of Lee.
“Tryin To Be Me” – Generic but still rocks.

THE BAD:
“Tired” – f/Joel Madden – Tommy is the topic of conversation in what is nothing more than a bad Good Charlotte style song.

FRANKLY: The biggest problem with Tommyland is that the best songs feature someone else doing their thing. It’s not quite clear if Tommy Lee is singing, wrote any of the songs, or is just playing drums.
