FILE UNDER: Heartbroke boy band balladeer is back.
CORPORATE LINE: “What’s Left of Me” consists of 12 tracks, 8 of which were co-written by Nick. Other talent on the album includes Andreas Carlsson (Celine Dion), Anders Bagge (98 Degrees, Madonna) and Dan Muckala (Backstreet Boys).
Nick Lachey is a Kentucky native who grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. While studying sports medicine at Miami University in Ohio, he and classmate Jeff Timmons auditioned for a vocal group that eventually included his brother Drew and buddy Justin Jeffre. The quartet became 98 Degrees. 98 Degrees sold 7 million albums in the US between 1997-2000.
THE GOOD:
Absolutely nothing.
THE AVERAGE:
“What’s Left Of Me” – Sure, teenage girls will swoon over his tenderness—but ultimately it’s too much.
“I Can’t Hate You Anymore” – The tabloids will enjoy this more than music fans.
“Beautiful” and “Everywhere But Here” – The only tracks that have a bit of soul and where Lachey doesn’t sound like he is trying to relive his days as a boy band member.
THE BAD:
“On Your Own” and “Outside Looking In” – A cheesy attempt at boy band ballads that end up a few guys short.
FRANKLY: Lachey doesn’t do anything to grow as an artist. What’s Left Of Me is nothing more than an extension of 98 Degrees with all the saccharine hooks and high-pitch vocals. It’s hard to tell whether this is real heartbreak or another chance for Lachey to be in the spotlight and milk his celebrity for all its worth.
