CORPORATE LINE: The Kills, the Anglo-American duo of VV, aka Alison Mosshart (guitar, vocals) and Hotel, aka Jamie Hince (drums, vocal, guitar), will release their sophomore release No Wow, March 8th on Rough Trade/RCA.
No Wow, the follow-up to 2002’s Keep on Your Mean Side, is teeming with some of the most alluring love-hate dichotomies ever put to tape. The duo’s chemistry is evident in every lyric and every fuzzed out guitar chord. The album gnaws at you in the best possible way, like an itchy sweater of libidinal bliss. The first single “The Good Ones” is raw and sultry with
lyrics adapted from a diary entry. Ahh, but whose diary?
THE GREAT:
None.
THE AVERAGE:
“No Wow” – No wow is a perfect way to describe this song. It’s an endless verse and bridge that misses a chorus.
“Dead Road 7” – Um, is this a song? It sounds like a bad demo that a good band would have left behind.
“I Hate The Way You Love” – Doesn’t sound bad yet its not really all that remarkable or memorable.
“Ticket Man” – Again, sounds okay but repeats the same verse over and over again and doesn’t quite make a song.
THE BAD:
None.
FRANKLY: The Kills sound like a wimpy White Stripes. They are stripped down so the songs sound like demos and the songs are mostly barren. If that’s your cup of tea than you’ll dig it but my flavor is song not demos.
