Toshi Kubota is called a groundbreaker for bringing the soul to Japan. You get a feel for his full voice on the opening track, “Nothing But Your Love”, but only until the bridge where he starts to fall off track.
Pras throws his hat into the international flavor on “Never Turn Back”. After a few listens, I started to get the old Tony Toni Tone vibe, so I guess it’s no surprise that ex-Tony Toni Tone member and frontman Raphael Saddiq gets in on the writing as he co-pens two tracks, “Shame” and “Pu Pu”.
Hooky is the oddly titled “Sha-Ba-Da-Bu-Doo (Go With The Flow)”. Most of the album is filled with soulful pop that sounds a lot like Tony Toni Tone minus the big hits. However, don’t be misled by that statement, because Toshi Kubota is a great singer with good songs and Nothing But Your Love is a nice record.
