People Watching boasts a few catchy songs. Although every song exhibits wonderful arrangement and instrumentation, Khaleel’s weak choruses and lack of organization are what really hurt this album. The album seems rushed and confused. Listeners like diversity, but not necessarily on every song. Khaleel’s sound travels from the R & B Seal-esque “No Mercy” to a seemingly Lenny Kravitz influence on “Feels Like Home”. As good as these songs are, it is hard to get an idea of what actually is Khaleel’s style.
“The One” seems to be the song where Khaleel displays his true range and vocal personality. “Love Comes ‘Round” is the best song on the album. This country-folk song has a great chorus. The often-repeated “da-goo-do” works its way into your mind long after the song is over.
Khaleel doesn’t spend much time attempting to write songs that will make him a rock star. His interest lies in substance rather than some simple pop formula. Unfortunately, his beautiful voice and occasional good song may get lost in the shuffle.
