Carole King is the queen of songwriters. Without her, there would be no Diane Warren, there’d be no Celine Dion, and there’d be a giant gap in popular music as we know it today.
Now, having said that, I need to review her latest release almost with one hand tied behind my back out of devotion. I didn’t find the two openers up to par with King’s past. “Love Makes The World” is average and “You Can Do Anything” could have been better had King not opted to bring Babyface the out of water.
“The Reason”, originally a King song sung by Celine Dion with King playing second fiddle, now finds King at the front with Dion backing her. It’s much more powerful this way. Rod Stewart and Maxine Brown had their go at “Oh No Not My Baby” and now King takes her song back and gives it her signature. One of the album’s better tracks finds the soul again on “You Will Find Me There”.
I think it just might be too much to ask Carole King to be her old self. I mean, it was decades ago when she was the absolute master of her craft. But every time you hear Carole King, you think hits. It’s hard not to. Love Makes The World has its high points, but not at the top of her discography. I still love her voice and would take her over anyone, anytime.
