Just Jack – The Outer Marker

Just Jack
Artist: Just Jack
Title: The Outer Marker
Label: TVT
Rating: 6/10

Corporate Line: Jack’s debut album, ‘The Outer Marker’ reveals an artist with more than one tale to tell. ‘Paradise (Lost and Found) offers the perfect introduction to the world of Just Jack. A gorgeous slice of lazy summertime urban blues, it was written, like much of his forthcoming album, during a three month stint living in France. Typically the track features a barbed spike behind its balmy warmth.

The Good:
“Let’s Get Really Honest” – A delicious verse swirling with a hot sampled hook. Look out Moby here comes your competition.
“Triple Tone Eyes” – Saving the best for last, Jack should stay away from rapping and stick with singing.

The Average:
“Paradise (Lost & Found)” – Jack’s isn’t going to win any MC awards.
“Heartburn” – Just Jack really is inclined to make you a fan – the larger picture is that the sound is too slow and monotonous. Each track is diverse but the one consistent is the brilliant hooks. Jack’s songs need to be broken up so that each song sounds more original and interesting.
“Contradictions” – When Jack kicks it up a notch he does it with a song that doesn’t lend much to separating itself.
“Snowflakes” and “Deep Thrills” – Delicious – there’s no sense of greatness however. You get the feeling this is good atmosphere for a doctor’s office.

The Ugly: Nothing.

Frankly: Just Jack brings sparse beats and with a voice that doesn’t take it higher. As an MC – Jack is lacking. His true skill is kicking out the hook. If you can get over the often weak verses and lackluster rhyming skills you might find this a gem.
