Corporate Line: Arif Mardin has again taken up production duties with Norah on Feels Like Home. Guests on the record include Dolly Parton, Levon Helm, and Garth Hudson of the Band, jazz drummer Brian Blade, Jesse Harris, Rob Burger and Tony Scherr. “I’m glad that people liked the last album. It was where I was at the time, musically,” says Norah. “This is where I am now. That’s what a recording is for me, like a snapshot. We had so much fun making this record.”
“Sunrise: Lovely”- Classicly Norah and is great for an opening song
“What Am I to You”- Great piece of Norah’s remarkable voice.
“Those Sweet Words”- Very hooky and great display of piano, but the music sounds very similar to “Don’t Know Why”
“Carnival Town”- Just too slow
“In the Morning”- Different from the rest of the album
“Be Here to Love Me”- Simply classic Norah
“Creepin’In”- Huh? Is Norah country now?
“Toes”- Another good one
“Humble Me”- Good story telling and all of us can relate to this song
“Above Ground”- songwriting is weak
“The Long Way Home” – The music has a great hook and this is another story with good execution by Norah
“The Prettiest Thing”- The title is good song doesn’t follow the expectation
“Don’t Miss You At All” – Slow, very slow…
Frankly: Come Away With Me was beautifully executed with songwriting and melody, the much anticipated release of Feels Like Home will be a surprise as it does not hold up to the previous. There were surprises in Feels Like Home and it sounds like Norah wanted to escape from the old sound but couldn’t. Norah has one incredible voice and ability to sing from a light whisper to a deep, crass soulful hum. There were times one wondered if she should be labeled as jazz once again, instead she seems to have found a new category; country.
