CORPORATE LINE: Which brings us to Courtney Jaye, the 20-something singer-songwriter whose debut album, Traveling Light, released June 7 on Island Records, embodies all the surprising and enthralling qualities of pop music that grab you in an instant and stay with you forever. (The fact that she’s drop-dead gorgeous, sharp as a tack and comes equipped with a magnetic personality is just icing on the cake.) Jaye writes recognizably real-life stories from the inside out – stories that anybody who’s ever been young and in love will relate to, and she delivers them in a beguilingly natural voice.
THE GREAT:
“Lose My Head” – A gorgeous pop song that never tries to be more than it is. It’s sweet without being sappy.
“Time For Goodbye” – The quirky pop songs are where Jaye truly shines.
“Can’t Behave” – A seriously unforgettable toe-tapping, sing-a-long song!
“Can You Sleep” – Gorgeous. You can’t help but be completely engulfed by Jaye’s voice.
THE AVERAGE:
“Permanent” – Better than the usual pop-song fare. Jaye really has a gorgeous voice that nearly makes up for anything that lacks in the lyrics or melody.
“Mental” – A song very similar to “Permanent.” Jaye almost makes an average melody more.
THE BAD:
Nothing.
FRANKLY: Courtney Jaye comes with no fanfare, no MTV special, and little if no marketing campaign. Funny thing is she deserves more than most disposable popstars. One can only hope she gets her due.
