Most would agree that Etta James is the mother of blues. Matriarch Of The Blues finds Etta singing songs that evoke deep emotions. Songs like Bob Dylans “Gotta Serve Somebody” and “Try A Little Tenderness” serve only as static moments in time until Etta opens them to their soulful end.
The Rolling Stones get a rendition of “Miss You”. Its not the albums best, but its intriguing. More to the liking was the toned down “Born On The Bayou”. The album goes out on the two best tracks: Ettas rendition of Ray Charles “Come Back Baby” is cause for celebration and “Hound Dog” is a song for the ages.
Etta James isnt about to spark a new musical revolution. No, the kids will find this a bit too mellow and maybe a bit boring. Its not about being angry, fast, or outrageous. Etta James is about expression and theres not a better way to get in touch with your soul than through the blues.
