Jay Kay, better known as the frontman for Jamiroquai, is back with his huge voice and disco beats. The last album, Synkronized, did noting to further the group’s success that Traveling Without Moving and its hit single, “Virtual Insanity”, gave them.
“Feels So Good” isn’t close to being Jamiroquai’s best single, but it pulsates through my subwoofer enough to shake my lazy ass off the sofa. And as unpretty a sight that might be, Jamiroquai keeps me there, caught in the disco turbulence of “Little L”. Although Jay will tell anyone that will listen that he makes soul music ala Stevie Wonder, this is disco if I’ve ever heard it, from the album’s cover to their obvious Daft Punk influenced “You Give Me Something”.
Caught in the headlights is where I stood awed by the lovely “Corner Of The Earth”. It’s Jay Kay at his most tender and perhaps most spiritual moment. New guitarist Rob Harris has made quite an impact on the group with the handful of acoustic tracks, including the lovely “Black Crow”, gorgeous “Pictures Of My Life”, and the daring “Twenty Zero One”.
For real, Jay Kay just might be better when he gets down, completely stripped of the drum machine and the disco lights. The acoustic songs absolutely rock this album to its foundations. They are a new flavor and something that keeps your eyes on the future for Jamiroquai. It looks so bright standing in the sunlight.
