Jane’s Addiction – Strays

Jane's Addiction
Artist: Jane’s Addiction
Title: Strays
Label: Capitol
Rating: 5/10

Company Line: Strays, the first all-new studio album from Jane’s Addiction in more than a dozen years. Released in conjunction with the Jane’s hotly anticipated, headlining return to this summer’s Lollapalooza tour, the eleven-track collection reunites vocalist Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro, and drummer Stephen Perkins with newly-recruited bassist Chris Chaney.

The Good:
“Strays” – Navarro again seems to steal the show with his axe. Perry Farrell’s voice is notched up a few and gives us the rock ‘n’ roll we’ve waited thirteen years for.
“Price I Pay” – Goes from heavy to mellow. It’s a good way to break up the contrasts of paying the price to whomever you owe, including those you owe all your fame.

The Marginal:
“True Nature” – Dave Navarro burns it up with hot licks but they only offer a disguise to a very thin track without anything more attached.
“Everybody’s Friend” – We’ve all been there, trying to do everything we can to be the nice guy or to make everyone like us but it doesn’t always work and is the same story with this song.
“Just Because” – It’s a wall of sound that simply sounds toothless.

The Ugly:
“Hypersonic” – Sounds like a track made for a bad video game.

Frankly: Jane’s Addiction has taken over a decade to release Strays and honestly I think my life could have gone on just fine without this release.
