Corporate Line: Incubus scored a multi-format radio smash and mass success in 2001 with the lilting, sing-along “Drive,” which hit #1 on Modern Rock charts and also landed in the uppermost reaches of the Top 40. But the band’s core fans will be stoked that their new album, A Crow Left Of The Murder, kicks like a mule.
The Good:
“Megalomaniac” – Incubus is in transition. Fans hate transition. Trust us its okay.
“A Crow Left of the Murder” – Brilliant. This is the Incubus fans love.
“Here In My Room” – A gorgeous song – lovely without being corny.
The Average:
“Agoraphobia” – Boyd’s vocals are amazing – the music is too laid back to be recognizable as Incubus. It’s a game of give and take.
“Talk Show On Mute” – This has an awkward similarity to late Stone Temple Pilots – sort of the blue leisure suit and blue shoes.
“Southern Girl” – Speaking of Stone Temple Pilots – this has a slight resemblance as well.
“Pistola” – An experiment in simplicity that doesn’t always seem entirely pleasing.
“Priceless” – Has the S.C.I.E.N.C.E. signature sound.
The Ugly: No!
Frankly: A Crow Left Of The Murder is proof that you won’t get the Incubus who gave us Fungus Amongus, S.C.I.E.N.C.E. nor Morning View. You’ll have to accept the fact that the boys are growing up and are bored of themselves. What’s most interesting is how you know it is Brandon Boyd singing yet it doesn’t sound like Incubus – you almost feel like you’re listening to a solo project. Give it a chance and maybe you’ll see growing up is all about experience and Incubus wants to offer us something new.
