FILE UNDER: A beautiful operatic Christmas album.
CORPORATE LINE: The cosmopolitan quartet of pop/opera crossover singers are back and this time to make your holidays extra special! After releasing their breakthrough self-titled in 2005, the men of Il Divo return with an exquisite Christmas album that will definitely put you in the festive mood. The Christmas Collection features 10 beautifully sung songs by the group including their own renditions of popular Christmas songs such as “O Holy Night,” “White Christmas,” “Silent Night,” and “Adeste Fideles (O Come All Ye Faithful).” The holidays have never sounded this good!
THE GREAT:
“O Holy Night” – Not many singers can pull of this classic song in a way that gives you goosebumps—Il Divo does just that.
“Adete Fideles (O Come All Ye Faithful)” – Another song that can really move you. There voices are absolutely amazing.
“The Lord’s Prayer” – It sounds more classical and brilliant—and even if it doesn’t put you in the holiday spirit it is simple beautiful.
THE AVERAGE:
“Silent Night” – Surprisingly this rendition doesn’t have much power.
”White Christmas” – It seems nearly impossible to take those huge voices and sing what is really a pop song. In the end it sounds awkward as they bring it down a notch.
“Ave Maria” – Their voices are absolutely brilliant. The instrumentation on the other hand leaves a lot to be desired. It sounds synthetic. When the Three Tenors put out songs they sounded timeless—this does not.
THE BAD:
“Over The Rainbow” – Someone please show me how this became a Christmas song. Not only does it not fit here the opening line is awful.
FRANKLY: Il Divo took a different route to their Christmas songs and for good reason. Their voices are natural to songs such as “O Holy Night” and “Adeste Fideles.” There are songs however that doesn’t fit them quite as well—such as “White Christmas.”
