Idlewild – 100 Broken Windows

Idlewild
Artist: Idlewild
Title: 100 Broken Windows
Label: Capitol
Rating: 7.5/10

Out of the land of plaid comes the next big rock quartet, Idlewild.

Idlewild brings REM together with Nirvana as witty lyrics wrap around glorious hooks that sway but never fall down.

The opener, “Little Discourage”, is mostly early REM when they were still a couple of punks trying to change the world. Idlewild takes it up a notch with the fierce “I Don’t Have The Map”.

For all of Idlewild’s ferocity, they know how to tone it down and play from the heart as in “Let Me Sleep (Next To The Mirror)”. Then there is the almost delicate “Quiet Crown” coming in under the radar bringing us to the end. The gentlest and best track is “The Bronze Medal”.

Idlewild reminds me of Kent, one of my favorite bands a few years ago. I’m sure you never heard of them either, but Isola was one of the best albums I’ve heard in years. Idlewild is a lot like them, a band from a small country that has to try and plant its roots in the vast States of America. Will they fall on deaf ears like Kent? Perhaps, but I’ll be listening. If you don’t, it’s your loss.
