Natalie Imbruglia

Natalie Imbruglia is RCA UK’s latest signing. Natalie found fame as a member of the cast of Australian soap opera “Neighbours.” Following her departure from the soap and subsequent presenting jobs, Natalie could have quite easily followed the well-trodden ex-Soap Star route. However, spend five minutes in the company of Natalie Imbruglia and you’ll know that she could not have done this. Imbruglia is simply not malleable enough to have ever been just another starlet. Spend ten minutes with her and it really isn’t such a surprise that she has made such a surprising album.

Natalie was born in Sydney, Australia on February 4th, 1975. She grew up, one of four girls from a redneck beach town. “It was only cool to have blond hair and be a surfer chick. I could learn how to surf, but I still looked Italian. It took me a long time to realize that was a good thing.”

Natalie moved to London in 1996, after getting caught up in the initial excitement of the place, Natalie wanted out:

“I was by my self in London, going out a lot so I wouldn’t get lonely. I don’t come from that kind of lifestyle and was really excited to be part of it. Then the bubble burst, and all I could think of was ‘Get me out of here!”

So she sat and worked out what she really wanted to do, which was write songs and sing. The songs were good and the voice so gorgeous that she soon found herself in L.A., making this album.

Natalie has worked with many interesting people on the album. Her debut single, ‘Torn,’ was produced by Phil Thornalley and mixed by Nigel Godrich, of Radiohead fame. On, ‘Big Mistake’ she worked with Mark Goldenberg, who wrote and produced “Novacaine For The Soul” for the Eels, ‘Big Mistake,’ was produced by Andy Wright, who previously worked with Alisha’s Attic.

The album covers a wide variety of topics, as Natalie explains, ‘Impressed’ was inspired by a period of Natalie’s life when going to nightclubs was a frequent occurrence.

Natalie grins, “It’s about a sleazy guy with this six foot model who’s with him for all the wrong reasons. This girl with ‘ice cream beauty.’ You know, that very artificial kind of sexiness.”

‘One more Addiction’ – “I was in this headspace where it felt that I had no control over a relationship, that even though I was in it, it had nothing to do with me.”

‘City’- Written around the time when Natalie felt lost and alone in London – “I was very depressed when I wrote it.”

‘Torn’ entered the UK singles chart at #2, and has been in the top 10 for nine weeks, selling in excess of 900,000 copies. The single has been the most played track on UK radio for the past 6 weeks, with weekly plays of over 2,000, and broke the all time airplay record. The album entered the UK chart at #5.
