I have a feeling Hootie has run out of steam. I mean, their latest offering is a cover album. Most of the tracks were unfamiliar to me. The first track I came upon that I know is Zepplin’s “Hey, Hey What Can I Do”.
This album begins to pick up some serious dust quickly. Each song seems to have this bland flavor. It works on occasion, as with the cover of Tom Waits’ “I Hope I Don’t Fall In Love With You”. Then there are times where Darius Rucker’s voice just does nothing, like in Roy Orbison’s “Dream Baby”. And they go on to destroy REM’s “Driver 8”. Yikes. They got the album title right, but I don’t think they expected what was getting scattered, smothered, and covered to be so messy.
