A few years ago, I saw Hooverphonic open for Fiona Apple. I was mesmerized by Geike Arnaert’s voice and by the melody her band offered. When I found their new album, The Magnificent Tree, laying in wait, I snapped it up.
Hooverphonic can take fans away from groups like Massive Attack, but they have enough pop sensibility to steal fans from all over the orb. “Mad About You” has a James Bond flair as the orchestral vibe pulsates out of Alex Calliers synth, but again, it’s singer Armaert that brings it all home.
“Jacky Cane” has a great riff that moves the song along. The album has a decent pace, but you won’t find anything near punk here. It often lacks a push in some areas, but for the most part, it’s pretty damn groovy.
