Hesher – Hesher

Title: hesher
Label: Warner Bros.
Rating: 7/10

Blending both hip-hop and mellow pop beats, as well as adding some hard rock to the mix, Heshers self-titled debut promises to be a very diverse album. The lyrics display the deep thoughts of the human soul by delving in such issues as a simple glance out an ordinary window, the feeling of a broken heart, and a lighter thief who we can all relate to. Soulful feelings, mixed psychedelic beats, and the blend of a classic piano all add to the beauty of Hesher.

Taking The Whos “My Generation” and remixing it to resemble old school hip-hop, the final product features a much edgier beat and a light rap, creating the song “Whose Generation”. Modernizing the lyrics and changing the genre of music shows how the main idea of this song is able to span many generations. “Out My Window” is a much mellower tune that twists deep into the soul of Hesher. The lyrics are simple, but very effective. The use of a piano gives it classical sophistication, but also creates a whole new dimension to the song. “Anytime Of The Day” is a cute surprise about waiting for someone that he truly loves and is unable to find. It is very mellow but you can still tell theres pop influence on the music.

The song “Somethings Always” is very radio-friendly with an up-tempo beat and easily learned lyrics. Techno drums are added in the background and the high pitch squeal of teenage girls singing along to the chorus adds to the song. The next track, “Lighter Thief”, switches gears to heavy guitars and drums. The lyrics talk about someone stealing (what they call “taking”) a lighter, bringing out the humorous side of Hesher. The band closes out with a very Beatles-like song: “Thanks To You” is light, a deep song with piano and violin interludes that pays close attention to the classic rock feel. This is by far my favorite song.

By the quality of the songs and the soulful lyrics, you can tell that Hesher pays close attention to his work and strives for perfection. This album is well put together and will touch your emotional side. You may also be able to hear the influence of the styling of Everlast because John Gamble from Everlast helped produce the album. If you want a relaxing album with hip-hop, rock, and rap influences, then you will really enjoy Hesher.
