Sophie B. Hawkins – Timbre

Sophie B. Hawkins
Artist: Sophie B. Hawkins
Title: Timbre
Label: Ryko
Rating: 3/10

Sophie B. Hawkins is known best for the hit “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover”. On that note, we dive into her third release, Timbre.

Hawkins still seems to be trying to find a style that fits her. “No Connection” is actually the one song that makes the right connection between her talent and our ears. But it’s “I Walk Alone” that brings back the years that have passed since her one and only hit and gives some shining hope of the talent she has within.

“Bare The Weight Of Me” is joyful even in its own sorrow. “Nocturne” is more of the same sorrow, but just doesn’t touch your soul as much. It seems to miss the mark from the beat that strays to the song that never taps an emotion.

“The Darkest Childe” sums up Sophie B. Hawkins best. Not from its title, but by its misplaced energies. The loop used for the song makes no connection. It has no fit. It tries to hard to be something and falls completely short.
