Heavy D is back, bigger and deffer. He’s stepped back from his commercial past, those days when he was tossing out hits like “Now That We Found Love” and “We Got Our Own Thang” and has taken on a more serious tone.
“You Know” is some of the freshest rhyming that I’ve heard from the overweight lover in a while. Cee-Lo of the Goodie Mob was a damn good addition; the combination of himself and Heavy make for a truly dynamic duo. Heavy D. and Q-tip get together for another smooth round of tag teaming on “Listen”.
“Dancing In The Middle Of The Night” tries to rock, with Heavy taking a shot at being a balladeer. The song isn’t so bad, but Heavy should stick with his day job. Another rock song? Well, Chico DeBarge had no problem working on “Ask Heaven”, which is nothing but a synth rip-off of Led Zepplin’s classic “Stairway To Heaven”. I was hoping this trend was coming to an end, but here we go again. It’s too bad that many people won’t even realize this orchestration is ripped off; to make things worse, they don’t even credit Led Zepplin. And another rip-off? All I can say is that I hope Heavy D. and LL Cool J are tight, because when LL hears “You Nasty Hev” you can be sure he’s not going to be smiling. You’re killing me Heavy.
“Don’t Stop” finds the Heavy one doing his best impression of Bone Thugs -N- Harmony. Even though a bunch of the tracks are essentially remakes of other artists’ songs, they aren’t that bad. Still, I would feel much better about enjoying them if they were one hundred percent Heavy’s.
So what happens when the two biggest bodies in rap, Big Pun and Heavy D., get together? “On Point”, that’s what. It is one of the best tracks and sure to be a hit.
his album is supposed to be Heavy D.’s coming out. It’s not entirely disappointing, but it isn’t his best work to date. It is deep, it is introspective, but we are used to the big one being a bit cuddlier and more attainable. This album sounds good, but there are just too many tracks that are borrowed. Heavy isn’t even reinventing the wheel; he’s just stealing everyone else’s tires.
