Herbie Hancock – Possiblitities

Herbie Hancock
Artist: Herbie Hancock
Title: Possiblitities
Label: Universal
Rating: 5/10

CORPORATE LINE: Imagine the possibilities…..
“Possibilities” is the musical event of the year. The album is a series of inspired encounters between Herbie Hancock and world-renowned musicians – including John Mayer, Sting, Trey Anastasio, Annie Lennox, Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan, Santana and Angelique Kidjo, Paul Simon, Christina Aguilera, Jonny Lang, Joss Stone, and Raul Midon. Herbie Hancock describes “Possibilities” this way: “This is a real collaboration that we’re doing here. It’s all been decided at the session, a record without borders, woven like a tapestry with many colors. The possibilities are endless”

THE GREAT:
“A Song For You” f/Christina Aguilera – Aguilera doesn’t tone it down all the way but the smoky jazz club vibe fits her so good you wonder if she might consider an album of old standards.
“When Love Comes To Town” f/Joss Stone & Jonny Lang – What a duo!

THE AVERAGE:
“Stitched Up” f/John Mayer – Catchy sounds too much like a regular John Mayer song. I’m not sure where Herbie Hancock fit into this track.
“Hush, Hush, Hush” f/Annie Lennox – Boy can she sing. But this isn’t a great song. The same can be said for Sting’s contribution, “Sister Moon.”
“I do It For Your Love” f/Paul Simon – As much as I wanted to love this song the lyrics were too pointless and never created anything more than a bland song atop a lovely instrumental track.
“I Just Called to Say I Love You” f/Raul Midon – It’s not that Midon doesn’t have a delightful voice—but Hancock produced a song that is too synthetic.

THE BAD:
“Don’t Explain” f/Damien Rice & Lisa Hannigan – Good tune to help insomniacs.

FRANKLY: If you can buy the Christina Aguilera and Joss Stone/Jonny Lang tracks on iTunes then you’ll be better off. Hancock for the most part produces delightful instrumental tracks too bad the singers don’t always deliver.
