Ed Harcourt – Strangers

Ed Harcourt
Artist: Ed Harcourt
Title: Strangers
Label: Astralwerks
Rating: 5.5/10

CORPORATE LINE: Strangers is Ed Harcourt at his intimate, intricate, infuriating and exhilarating best. Who will become friends of Strangers? “Oh I’m not going to say my music’s for all the lost souls out there or something like that. Love can make you happy, and this is a concerted effort to make a more immediate, upbeat album or at least I try. I’ll make music till my last breath, and it’s for everyone, really. Everyone with a soul, anyway.”

THE GREAT:
“Let Love Not Weigh Me Down” – Finally Harcourt moves out of the monotony of his past and gives one hell of a spirited performance. The same can’t be said for “Something To Live For.”
“The Music Box” – Precious—the lyrics are vivid and striking.

THE AVERAGE:
“The Storm Is Coming” – If this song came five years ago it might have been innovative however now after Coldplay it sounds little more than a cast off.
“Born In the 70’s” – Harcourt never inspires. The sound invokes a “so what?”
“Open Book” – Too much falsetto for Harcourt’s own good.

THE BAD:
Nothing.

FRANKLY: Ed Harcourt can write gorgeous lyrics and has a lovely voice however it’s another record full of rainy day tunes. It’s not exactly uplifting or inspiring. It’s sad because Harcourt is a deft singer/songwriter but not on par with the likes of neither Rufus Wainwright nor Josh Rouse.
