Anthony Hamilton – Soulife

Anthony Hamilton
Artist: Anthony Hamilton
Title: Soulife
Label: Universal
Rating: 6/10

CORPORATE LINE: On Soulife, soul sensation Anthony Hamilton’s lost Atlantic debut, the Grammy-nominated singer fuses classic ’70s soul with contemporary R&B and achieves some stellar results. This disc brings to light never-before-released material recorded between 1999 and 2001 and includes the track “Love And War,” featuring Macy Gray and previously released on the Baby Boy soundtrack. Hamilton gained notoriety by singing back up for D’Angelo and through his performance on the Nappy Roots track “Po’ Folks” before coming into his own as a major recording star.

THE GREAT:
“Ol’ Keeper” – This is a keeper. You can’t help but listen over and over.
“I Used To Love Someone” – Subtle greatness. Hamilton doesn’t have to pump it up to make the soul shine throughout.
“I Cry” is another song where it comes in like a lamb and yet it doesn’t have to try and roar like a lion to be great.
“Georgi Parker” – Crisp, clean, and sexy. What it’s all about? Does it matter? Sometimes you have to let the music seduce you.

THE AVERAGE:
“Day Dreamin’” – Sassy. The chorus won’t wow you.
“Last Night” f/Sunshine Anderson & Dolo Pichino – Any one that was a fan of Tony, Toni, Tone will love this. The big difference is there is no huge hook.

THE BAD:
Nothing.

FRANKLY: Anthony Hamilton has a voice that could steal your soul. It’s so laidback and yet you’re never bored. Every track offers something that will soothe you.
