I’ve been a huge Grand Puba fan since he first praised his Nubian brothers of Brand Nubian. All For One was a classic Brand Nubian album that vaulted them into the world of hip-hop, but Puba went solo with the overt and over the top Reel-To-Reel. That album never caught on, leaving him in a vacuum.
All the Grand Puba skits, of which there are six, are embarrassing. But that isn’t all that’s bad. There are plenty of sorry songs to pick from. Don’t think I’m picking a fight, I loved Puba during his Brand Nubian days, but those days are long past. “Understand This” is nothing but a brag fest by an MC that doesn’t have his best rhyme on.
As Understand This opens with “All Day” and “Issues”, it sounds too clearly that Puba has lost his step and swagger. “Don’t Lie To Me” is lost in Puba saying the title over for what seems like hours. Click, next song please. “Dreams”, next. Where is the once endless talent? Where are the fun rhymes, where are the jokes, where is the wit? Who in the hell stole my Grand Puba?
