Macy Gray has one of the most fantastic voices in popular music today. Even when it doesn’t seem like it’s used well in some songs you will still find yourself awed by her power. The Id finds Gray putting on a show after no one thought she could follow up her amazing freshman release.
The Id starts off slow with “Relating To A Psychopath” and still doesn’t find its stride with “Boo”. Even the “Sexual Revolution” and its disco meets ’70’s R&B doesn’t quite sooth the soul. And although Gray’s cover of Slick Rick’s “Hey Young World Part 2” may find its way on radio, it’s not original and it’s not solid gold.
It takes about five songs before Gray finds her way. “Sweet Baby” hits the spot, while “Harry” brings in the millennium with bellbottoms in bloom. “Don’t Come Around” is my favorite track; this has that Etta James flavor and it’s something I’d like to hear more of from her.
Macy Gray is talented, no doubt. The problem is that you expect so much more from her. The biggest problem is that when she tries to play the newer R&B or hip-hop card, it never seems to work. When Gray gets down to some old school sounds she absolutely blows your mind. Gray, give us more old school!
