Gorillaz is a farce, but it’s almost impossible to get down to the nuts about what’s actually the real deal. I do know it is the brainchild of Damon Albarn, frontman from Blur, and Jamie Hewlett. The brainchild is four cartoon characters that cross all cultures to form one slick bubblegum outfit.
“Re-Hash” is a great pop track and starts the album off giving you hope that perhaps you’ve discovered something totally free and new. “5/4” does good to keep the euphoria going, but as cute as “Tomorrow Comes Today” is, it pulls the whole cartoon down by its penciled in ear.
Gorillaz saving grace is Del The Funkee Homosapian breaking it down on “Clint Eastwood”. Del however doesn’t do justice to “Rock The House”. This may be the first and last time I say this, but I’d have rather hear Rob Base telling me how to get down, bad beats and all.
“Punk” isn’t all that bad either. It’s super-hyper. Add a little caffeine and you just might explode.
As talented as Albarn is, his voice bending does get boring. It’s not Blur and it’s not always good either. The Gorillaz album suffers most from monotony. It gets so boring toward the end that I nearly drifted off to sleep as it went on. The vision was true, the idea was solid, but the songs, well, they came third.
