Stone Gossard is the longtime axeman from Pearl Jam. His solo album, Bayleaf, includes tracks where Stone sings and where Ty Wilman sings.
Ty Wilman brings a soulful flavor to “Cadillac”, but not one I need to hear again. “Unhand Me” brings as much excitement as another sunny day in southern California.
When Stone Gossard sings, he occasionally hits the right notes, when he isn’t doing his worst T-Rex impersonation on “Bore Me” or Bowie on “Fits”. This isn’t to say that there aren’t potentially good songs; it’s just that they aren’t good songs with Gossard singing them. Okay, “Bayleaf” isn’t bad, but can someone find Don Henley to team him up with Gossard so we won’t have to suffer through this? Actually, if Gossard sang more songs like “Bayleaf”, this album wouldn’t be getting half this wrath.
We’re not all born singers, and Gossard should be happy he’s such a great musician, but someone please take that microphone away from him. I’m tired of well-known musicians getting record deals so they can make so-called art. Because if this is art, I want Epic Records to know I have a dog that can howl a clean E. Send an A&R guy.
